So this week
was a busy and exciting week for me! I had the opportunity to attend Social
Media Week which was held at the amazing BFI in London this year.
For those of
you that don’t know, Social Media Week is a conference that showcases a week
full of interesting talks, presentations, panels and workshops from some of the
biggest brands and agencies in the industry. The talks covered a range of topics, sharing insights into the exciting ways that social
media is being used to define brand identities and engage communities.
If you are
interested in reading about the brands and agencies that shared their
innovative new digital marketing ideas, then stay tuned as I present to you the
top 3 talks of the week:
1. The Power of Storytelling: How National
Geographic dominates a fragmented media landscape by Nadine Heggie from
National Geographic.
In this
fascinating presentation, Nadine Heggie took us through the importance of
investing in storytelling. She also spoke about one of their
successful social media campaigns where they partnered with Davidoff
Coolwater to ‘turn social media blue’ with blue photography to celebrate world
ocean day.
They used custom content from Davidoff to garner wider spread
engagement. What I love most about their campaigns is that they tie in eco
friendly messages and use clever themes that are both relevant, engaging and interactive.
2. In Pursuit of the Idea: The
Marginalisation of Creativity by Damola Timeyin & Kate Murphy from BBH
London
I absolutely
adore BBH as an agency. Everything that they stand for in terms of taking risks
with ideas, being innovative and not being afraid to stand out is exactly what
digital marketing is all about.
Damola and Kate
posed many thought-provoking questions throughout the talk one of which being
‘Is your context limiting your ability to create distinctive ideas?’
There was loads
of food for thought to take away from the talk and the agencies tagline ‘Black
sheep wanted’ is absolute GENIUS.
3. Cultivating the entrepreneurial mindset:
Secrets from Forbes 30 under 30 Europe list hosted by Jessica Sibley from
Forbes Media
This
talk was presented in a panel style made up of three of the entrepreneurs that
made the list this year; Amber Atherton - Founder of My Flash Trash, Ross
Bailey – CEO of Appear Here and Maximillian Guen – Co-Founder of Magna Cartner
TV. The discussion gave an enlightening insight into their journeys on the road to
success and how social has played a part in that.
